Company History
Phillip and Nathan Dove originally established Dove Industries Inc.
in 1945 as Dove Venetian Blind Company in North Hills, PA.
The venetian blind business began its decline in the latter part
of the 1950’s; and by the early 1960’s, the company name
was changed from Dove Venetian Blind Company to Dove Home Specialties.
At that time the company’s marketing strategy was the retail
sale of aluminum products. The product line included such items as
aluminum storm windows, doors and jalousie windows. In 1963, Dove
Home Specialties began manufacturing jalousie windows.
In 1965, Bruce Dove, the son of Nathan Dove and grandson of Phillip
Dove, joined the company. Shortly thereafter in 1970, Eric Dove began
to work for the family owned company. The young Dove brothers began
to learn the trade from the bottom up by learning such skills as
glazing, screening, and assembling windows.
In 1972, the company name was changed to Dove Vinyl Windows, Inc.
Also starting in 1972, the company began to slowly phase out of the
retail segment of the business and focus its marketing strategy on
the manufacturing end of the aluminum business. By 1980, the company
was under the joint leadership of Bruce and Eric Dove. Bruce became
solely responsible for the sales and marketing aspects of the company.
Eric became responsible for managing production planning and all
other company operations.
Dove Vinyl Windows, under the management of the two brothers, began
to grow even beyond the dreams of its founders. This growth was fueled
by a manufacturing strategy, which over time successfully developed
more than 14 products. The first products produced by Dove Industries
included aluminum porch enclosures, aluminum storm doors, aluminum
replacement windows, picture windows and many other products.
The Dove brothers realized that to sustain company growth, attention
to customer demand is essential. They agreed that analysis of market
trends, adaptation to change, and a vision of the future must always
be at the core of any long-term decisions. In the early 1980’s,
when they determined that the number of vinyl extruders began to
increase, they knew change was on the horizon. They sensed that the
market was beginning to shift from aluminum based products to vinyl.
However, they also knew that the transition from an aluminum-based
manufacturer to the manufacture of vinyl products must be well planned
with a minimum interruption of company operations. They also were
aware that certain technological problems associated with the manufacture
of vinyl products had not yet been fully corrected. Therefore, rather
than give their customers an inferior product, they chose to wait
until the quality of product developed by the new extruders reached
a quality level consistent with Dove Industries philosophy. The Dove
brothers showed great judgement in their decision to wait for the
vinyl extruders to resolve these problems before making the switch
from aluminum to vinyl. The success of their plan can be measured
in the company’s sales growth. In the first three years company
sales exceeded the five-year forecast. The manufacture and sale of
vinyl products catapulted the company to an unexpected level. Today,
the company’s aluminum product line has been completely eliminated.
In 1994, Dove made a successful move to a 180,000 square foot manufacturing
facility in Wilkes Barre, PA.
As Dove Industries faced the turn of the next century and millenium,
the company continued to concentrate its production efforts on vinyl
and energy efficient products. Dove Industries is no longer the small
company founded 60 years ago in North Hills, PA. Today, Dove Industries
is a major player in the vinyl window industry. Dove Vinyl Windows,
under the principal leadership of Bruce and Eric Dove, has grown
from a base of zero vinyl window production in 1987 to over 16,000
windows by the end of 1988. Currently, Dove Industries produces 170,000+
vinyl window per year. Since 1987, Dove Industries has grown to a
multimillion-dollar company.
The latest addition to the Dove product line is the high end DP50,
a window that completes a full line of good, better, best. This new
product line now enables Dove to compete with the best and most energy
efficient windows made in the country.
The new millenium is here. Currently represented in 19 states, a
future production of 500,000 windows per year is not far off. A new
generation of Dove’s is also here. Along with Eric and Bruce
Sr.’s commitment to the company, Bruce Dove Jr. and Ron Dove
are poised to take the company to the next level and carry on the
great tradition of Dove Industries.
Dove Industries is a stable fully matured company that has not only
survived but has achieved consistent growth each year since Eric
and Bruce Dove became principles in the company. There is a strong
commitment to quality and customer service, which is reflected by
the numerous product inspections prior to products leaving the plant.
Eric and Bruce Dove have made sure that the dream of their father
in 1945 will live on into the next century when the next generation
of Doves take charge of the family business.
